MSL NSX High-Boost Kit
714.321.6006
Since the Big H seems intent on making throttle-by-wire standard, tuners have scrambled to find ways of tweaking engine performance using the e-throttle or coming up with workarounds.
MSL Products of Huntington Beach, Calif., offers the former, a high-boost kit for '95-up supercharged NSXs. Based around a modified AEM EMS box outfitted with MSL's piggyback harness, the kit is designed exclusively for drive-by-wire throttle systems.
The electronics all fit underneath the factory panels behind the NSX's seats, and the kit, base map included, goes for $2,500. MSL principal Mike LaPier also hopes to have '06 S2000 kits soon, and is looking for more e-throttle platforms to R&D with.
Autowave in HB (714/841-2433) installed the kit in a customer's car, and in addition to the harness and AEM box (note: not included in the kit price), the owner had to buy a smaller 8psi pulley (which Comptech carries), and a higher-volume 255-lph Walbro fuel pump.
Other fuel necessities include RC Engineering 550cc injectors to replace the stock 240s and a JDM-sauce Sard 1:1 fuel pressure regulator to replace the rising-rate unit that came with the Comptech kit already on the customer's car. Since Autowave will be tuning the MSL kit with the EMS and larger injectors, any regulator and electronic piggyback units that came with the blower are now unnecessary.
The customer's car came with Comptech's latest blower kit, which boasts an Autorotor pump said to be more efficient (and run cooler) than the previous Whipple units, making up to 15 percent more horsepower. And since the fuel rails can be removed without pulling off the pump, the Comptech kit is also easier to service.
Testing on Autowave's Dyno Dynamics rollers, and fueled with 91-octane pump gas, the blown C32 engine came to the shop putting down 358hp and 235 lb-ft of torque at the wheels under 6psi of boost-a pretty remarkable baseline by most standards.
With the MSL enhancements though, those numbers went from impressive to monstrous, picking up huge power in the midrange, roughly 70 horses around 5700rpm. We ended up with peak horsepower of 406 and peak torque of 263 lb-ft; about a 14 percent bump.
