2000 Honda Civic DX - Space Oddity

Bolts&Washers
Alex Patterson's 2000 Civic DX

Propulsion
At the heart of Patterson's EJ6 sled is a heavily-modded D16Y8 sitting on Hasport mounts, built for boost with Darton sleeves, a balanced and polished Y8 crank, Wiseco rings and pistons with coated skirts, Eagle 900HP H-beam rods, ARP rod bolts and ACL bearings.

Up top, the Y8 head was given a three-angle port and polish job by Redzone, then assembled with a single Zex stage one cam, Ferrea 6000 Series competition valves (0.5 oversized), springs and titanium retainers. ARP head studs cinch the block and head together with an OEM head gasket in between. An AEM Tru-Time adjustable cam gear keeps the cam/crank relationship in check.

A Greddy oil cooler kit, relocated using a custom Redzone kit, keeps the engine lubed with lines good for up to 100psi. Patterson also uses a Greddy water temp kit to regulate the Fluidyne radiator.

A Precision T3/T4 turbo (SC-3427E; .57 trim) delivers the boost; aided by a Spoolin Performance's manifold, 2.5-inch charge piping and dumptube. A K&N filter allows air in through the turbo's three-inch inlet. After exhale, exhaust flows through an eight-inch Johnny RaceCar intercooler, a Focus 2 custom intake manifold and Integra Type R 64mm throttle body. Spent exhaust exits via the 2.5-inch custom exhaust.

A DMH E-cutout, controlled from the driver's seat, offers some horsepower flexibility on the hot side, while the TiAL 50mm blow-off valve and 38mm/10psi wastegate regulate boost pressure. Spoolin Performance oil feed/return lines ensure the turbo is never starved for lube.

A small engine with this kind of power requires an ignition and fuel delivery system equally on point. Patterson's D16 receives juice from a Walbro fuel pump and AEM fuel filter fed through stock lines into an AEM fuel rail and big RC Engineering 750 injectors with OBD-1 clips.

Spark generates through an MSD SCI ignition box, MSD Blaster coil and stock distributor with add-on MSD cap and coil, down Nology Hot Wire plug wires and finally to NGK Stage 3 cold plugs gapped .0028. Orchestrating the intricate setup is a P28 ECU tuned by Redzone using CROME software.

Redzone rebuilt Patterson's D16Z6 tranny with OE parts and stock gearing, but also added its own Stage 3, 6-puck clutch, an OBX limited-slip, ACT Xact Street Lite 11-lb. flywheel and Gator Stage 2/3 axles good for up to 400hp.

Evidence
301 wheel hp and 225 lb-ft at 15 lbs. of boost on 91-octane pump gas.

Rims & Rubber
More points from the street for the 15-inch Mugen RNR's, finished in gunmetal with fully polished lips, wrapped in Nitto 205/50/15 rubber, and secured to the hubs with Zenki Pink extended lug nuts, four to a side.

Stance
The underpinnings of Patterson's Civic form around Omni Power coilovers and Energy Suspension bushings and shifter mounts. Enhancements include Omni Power's camber kit and rear adjustable camber links, while reinforcement comes from Suspension Techniques sway bars and a Full Race traction bar kit.

Resistance
Patterson did a 2001 Integra GS-R rear disc conversion, planted Brembo cross-drilled rotors up front, and then added calipers, master cylinder and proportioning valve from a 2000 Civic EX. PBR Ultimate ceramic brake pads deliver the final bite.

Fashion
Outside: The EJ is coated in a custom gunmetal gray blend, accented by black JDM headlights with FD Platinum White Extreme bulbs inside, Carbon Creations carbon-fiber front grille, carbon-fiber hood and a Mugen carbon-fiber lip.

Inside: Anchoring the interior scheme are Bride ERGO II black buckets set atop Redzone's custom rails, surrounded by 2000 Civic Si dash and full interior (including climate control, cluster and shift boot). A MOMO steering wheel is secured with Omni Power's detachable quick-release hub while a mix of 2000 Si, Defi, Nordskog and Summit digital gauges report on engine conditions. Final touches include a 2001 GS-R shifter and Skunk2 shift knob.

Ice
A Pioneer DEH-P5500MP head unit powers a set of MB Quart components in front and 6.5-inch speakers in the rear deck. An Optima Yellow Top battery ensures that not only the audio system gets its sip of voltage, but that the engine bay gets all it needs as well.
