Pierre Kleinubing secured his fourth driver's championship in the final race of the 2006 season at Laguna Seca. In his 100th start in the Touring Car series, Kleinubing finished fourth, claiming enough points to capture the title over Mazda's Randy Pobst, who was on the Brazilian's rear bumper for the entire season.
"I think that I drove my best season ever," Kleinubing said. "I was patient. I did what I needed to do at the right times."
It was another strong season for RealTime Racing. The team ended the year with three drivers in the top five in the championship points. They combined to win four races, with Kleinubing winning two. Brandon Davis won in Denver, and Eric Curran took the checkered flag at Laguna Seca. RealTime had the manufacturers' championship wrapped up for Acura by the ninth round of the 10-event season.
"This year's fight was the toughest one yet," said RealTime Racing team owner Peter Cunningham. "Pierre deserves this championship because he drove with maturity and speed all year long. He might have won in other years since his last title in 2001, but he didn't always catch his share of the breaks along the way."
